FRESH PICK: ART + EDEN SUSTAINABLE CHILDREN’S CLOTHING
I enjoy highlighting independent brands here, especially ones that give back. art + eden is a sustainable children’s clothing company that is global-minded, from their choice in fabrics to the people they support with every purchase. With a motto of “buy better. do better,” art + eden believes in total transparency of what their clothes are made of, how they’re made, and where your money goes. They make a good point that while we feed our children organic food, are we thinking about the chemicals in their clothing? About 25% of global insecticide is used in cotton production and over 8,000 synthetic chemicals are used to turn raw materials into textiles. With art + eden, the girls’ line is made with organic cotton and the boys’ line is comprised of items made of organic cotton, or a mix of organic cotton and recycled or upcycled polyester. They commission artists from all around the world to bring you unique and artful prints, as you can see below.
art + eden also makes a global impact with every purchase you make. Through their Clothes with a Cure program, which launched in 2016, each purchase provides mentoring, medication and multivitamins to children in Central America. The art + eden team has made a local impact through their mentor program at the Camden Street school in Newark in N.J., where 90% of the children live below the poverty line. Now about the clothes: art + eden carries clothing for babies, boys and girls. As you can see, this is a vibrant and colorful brand, with prints created by artists around the world. I absolutely fell in love with the Blanche Dressthat was sent to us for review. Aside from the beautiful marine life print, the fabric is that thick and soft cotton that lasts through many washes and hand-me-downs. The pleated front skirt is a detail that you’ll notice is part of other special touches that make this a unique collection. The test of any clothing, though, is how your kids will like it. Thankfully my youngest was so excited to wear her new dress to the farmers’ market. She already loves fish (Finding Dory!!), so the print was already a big win. I knew the fit was right on for her too since she does not last more than a few seconds in something that feels weird. Another bonus was that she got to wear it with her new unicorn purse too. The only thing I wish is that there were women’s clothing too.
